Programme Aims

The aim of the programme is to equip students with the knowledge in (i) authentication, identification, quality analysis, quality control and patenting of Chinese medicines (CMs); (ii) the new dosage-form design of modern Chinese medicinal products; (iii) fundamental skills in research and development of Chinese medicinal products; and (iv) regulation and management of the pharmaceutical industry in Hong Kong.

Programme Details

The programme encompasses pharmaceutical science of Chinese Material Medical, basic theories of Chinese Medicine, basic sciences, Western pharmacy and practicum training. During the four-year of studies, students are required to complete a 15-week practicum, and in the final year, students are required to carry out an honours project before graduation. throughout the programme, research concepts and tools are emphasized, and the concept of “Whole Person Education” is also stressed by providing a student-oriented, adaptive and holistic education in the general education programme.

Practicum and Honors Project

As early as in the summer of the 1st year of studies, students will have an opportunity to broaden their knowledge in different research areas of medicinal herbs by taking a 2-week practicum in Hong Kong and Mainland. In the summer of 3rd year and the 4th year of studies, students will begin their Supervised Practicums II and III. In the 4th year of studies, students are required to conduct an 8-month Honours Project under the supervision of professors in the School. The research topics include authentication of Chinese material medical and medicinal herbs, phytochemical constitution and quality control, herbal pharmacology and toxicology, as well as Chinese medicine preparation and new Chinese medicine products development.
