專業概況
在這里學什么?The Foundation Year in Law and Social Sciences is offered as an entry route to a law, politics, criminology or sociology degree for students who don't yet meet the entry requirements for degree-level study. You enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. If you complete this year successfully you progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses in these subject areas. The number of students who progress to degree study are very high - in fact some of these students have gone on to become some of our most successful graduates.
Overview
You’ll learn the principles of the English legal system, and gain reflection through social, political, economic, ethical and historical perspectives. You’ll also build a range of transferable skills, including abstract thinking and problem solving, that will allow you to prepare practically as well as academically for a successful legal career.
Our School of Law is leading pioneering research across key legal disciplines including international criminal law, and immigration with a focus on human rights. You’ll get access to plenty of support from tutors who bring global experience and a diverse range of academic interests that will help shape your studies and expertise.
What will you study on the BA Law?
In your first year you will explore legal research skills and take part in a moot. In Year 2 you will take three compulsory modules that explore civil and criminal liability, equality and the European single market. You can also choose from optional modules in: Consumers and the Law, Human Rights, and Jurisprudence. In Year 3 you will tailor your studies towards your career interests and select from a range of options to gain specialist knowledge in areas such as employment law or immigration.
What will you gain?
You will become confident in analysing and managing large quantities of complex information from both printed and electronic sources, and learn to construct clear and well-reasoned legal arguments.
Assessment
The course will provide you with opportunities to test your knowledge and understanding informally through ‘formative’ assessment. This will be completed before your formal ‘summative’ assessment which will count towards your final marks. Each module normally contains at least one piece of formative assessment from which you will receive feedback from your tutor. Formative assessments are developmental and any grade you receive does not count towards your final marks.
Careers
English law governs global commerce and legal systems around the world, so a law degree from an English university will open the doors to an international legal career if you decide not to stay in the UK. A law degree is highly valued by employers and transferable to a wide range of sectors, including: local government, politics, the civil service, business, management, and administration. Graduates who wish to pursue a career as a lawyer may take a Graduate Diploma in Law (CPE).
